I'm a web developer that is curious by trade. My previous background as an Environmental Scientist and experiences in the retail industry, prepared me for a life as a developer.

My Story

ARMED WITH THE SKILL SET AND A STRONG DESIRE TO WORK FOR AN ORGANIZATION DEDICATED

TO MAKING AN IMPACT ON PEOPLE'S LIVES THROUGH TECHNOLOGY.

As a grad student in the Environmental Sciences program, I met lots of interesting people, and I was exposed to different ideas and points of views. During this time, I became interested in social and cultural environmental issues and took classes that were a little outside my major: environmental communication and environmental science education. These classes taught me how to create awareness campaigns, informative posters, and how to convey complex ideas and concepts into digestible and easy to understand information. That was when I discovered this hidden interest towards communication. Which led me to learn web design and development and went back to school to get a certificate.

I enjoyed creating prototypes and doing UX design, but lots of times I found that I couldn’t bring most of those prototypes to life because I didn’t know the programs that make the back end possible. That is when I decided that I wanted to be the one writing the code for the apps or websites.

I believe that all the knowledge in the world means nothing if it can’t be shared in a clear and accessible way. I found that through creating accessible and beautiful websites and/or application, information can be shared easily and people are more likely to enjoy it.

PROJECTS

I’ve had the pleasure and good fortune to be part of some interesting and exciting projects that have enhanced my experience and knowledge.

libros

Libros is a full-stack application that a book lover can use to catalogue their books by creating a virtual inventory. Libros allows the user to create a library/bookshelf by adding books using a search bar. The user searches a book by title and chooses from the displayed list of results. Each result has a button that saves the book to the user’s library.

The library displays book covers and its titles, when the user clicks a book cover, a new page displays detailed information of the book. In this page the user can write comments about the book, rate the book, add a loaning information (date, name) and indicate if the book has been read completely. The user has the ability to delete a book from the library.

This app uses Node/Express as the core framework for Javascript, PostgreSQL for the database in development and production and includes three Data Models.

Lemon Log (Collaborative effort)

Lemon Log is a technology review site, where authors of the site can write and publish posts and users of the site can comment on articles. The site allows all users to view and explore home page and about page, but only logged in users (users with an account) can create, edit and delete their own comments.

This is mock client contract project, were the instructors posted as clients and each group of three students was commissioned to build a specific app. Most of the app was developed by pair-programing, with some sections developed by each member of the team. I was responsible of implementing the upload image feature for the profile page.

This app uses Django as the core framework for Python, PostgreSQL for the database in development and production and includes three Data Models.

Academic Highlights

MS environmental science - Capstone project (Collaborative effort)

Suitability Analysis for Implementing Riparian Zones using GIS. The goal of this project was to help a nonprofit organization achieve its goal of reducing phosphorus in a lake/reservoir. This project located areas where riparian zones could be built or expanded to uptake excess phosphorus using a GIS model. Alongside this GIS model, a Story Map was created as an educational and informational tool.

For this proposal, a suitability assessment was developed, using the Structure Decision Making Process that uses six steps to evaluate a problem, articulate objectives and propose alternatives within an inclusive and transparent multi-stakeholder group deliberation

Sustainable Development and Resources Adaptive Management in Costa Rica

This two-week abroad class enabled me to enhance my understanding of the cultural and ecological factors that drive the implementation of different approaches to manage natural resources in a developing country. I prepared, presented and led a discussion on an important Costa Rican environmental topic. In addition, my background and experience enabled me to serve as a bridge between the Latino and American cultures.
